Quotes from Football Greats

football sunset

Over the years, football has blessed us with some of the most incredibly talented men from all over the world. There are those that are still with us today, such as Sir Alex Ferguson and Lionel Messi. There are then those that have passed, but will never be forgotten, like Brian Clough and George Best. In celebration of football itself, we decided to put together a collection of quotes from the very best:

Brian Clough

Brian Clough was an incredible footballer and manager, scoring 251 league goals from 274 starts at Sunderland and Middlesbrough. He had a conversion rate of 91.61 per cent, making him the third prolific scorer in the league. There are many Brian Clough quotes, but here are some of the best:

On Roy Keane: “I only ever hit Roy once. He got up so I couldn’t have hit him very hard.”

On history: “Rome wasn’t built in a day, but I wasn’t on that particular job.”

On the long ball approach: “If god had wanted us to play football in the clouds, he would have put grass up there.”

Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi Argentina

Lionel Messi needs little introduction. Many regard him as the best footballer there has ever been. Whether you agree with this or not, he is certainly up there as a sporting great, and here are some of his best quotes:

“I always want more. Whether it is a goal, or winning a game, I am never satisfied.”

“You have to fight to reach your dream. You have to sacrifice and work hard for it.”

“A lion doesn’t concern himself with the opinions of the sheep.”

Sir Alex Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson has provided football with some incredible moments over the years. Not only was he one of the best managers the Premier League has ever seen, but also he wasn’t afraid of a bit of controversy either.

On Ryan Giggs: “I remember the first time I saw him. He was 13 and just floated over the ground like a cocker spaniel chasing a piece of silver paper in the wind.”

On teamwork: I am going to tell you the story about the geese, which fly 5,000 miles from Canada to France. They fly in V-formation, but the second ones don’t fly. They’re the subs for the first ones. And then the second ones take over – so it’s teamwork.”

On Jose Mourinho: “He was certainly full of it, calling me ‘Boss’ and ‘Big Man’ when we had our post-match drink after the first leg. But it would help if his greetings were accompanied by a decent glass of wine. What he gave me was paint-stripper.”

George Best

George Best (1976)

The world of football was devastated when George Best passed away in 2005 after a long battle with alcoholism. During his footballing career, the Northern Irish footballer was one of the very best. Here are some of his quotes:

On not turning up for training: “I used to go missing a lot… Miss Canada, Miss United Kingdom, Miss World.”

On his legacy: “When I am gone, people will forget all the rubbish and all that will be remembered will be the football.”
